The conference has now ended. Ngā mihi nui, thank you very much to all who attended!

Access to recordings:

The recordings of this conference have now (as of December 2022) been made fully public for anyone interested in learning more about communicating science.

Visit the Web Hui section of our website to also view the recordings for our 2021 and 2022 conferences. The 2021 and 2022 recordings are password protected for SCANZ members - you can join SCANZ at any time to get unlimited access.

Conference information

Join us in this series of online hui and wānanga focused on how best to tell stories about scientific topics including (but not limited to) COVID-19.

We'll explore what worked well (or not so well) in Aotearoa's COVID-19 communications - but we'll also have plenty of sessions for those who want to hone their science storytelling knowledge and skills without thinking too much about the pandemic!

Highlights include:

  • Headline: Siouxsie Wiles and Toby Morris share how they created their highly effective COVID-19 infographics and what they experienced when these images went viral (excuse the pun!) around the world.

  • Learning about Māori-led science communication from Peter-Lucas Jones - the creator of Te Pūtahi iwi radio pilot programme, which shares Māori perspectives on science research to make it useful for haukāinga.

  • Headline: A behind the scenes 'tour' of the Unite Against COVID-19 campaign by social marketing (not social media) expert Linda Major, whose team designed the campaign heralded as a “communications masterclass”.

  • A masterclass with TEDxWellington licensee and speaker coach DK on how to combine public speaking, storytelling techniques and online mediums as a powerful strategy for effective communication.

  • Plus much, MUCH more!

Free access for members:

Join SCANZ now to receive a discount code to receive the pass to all sessions (normal $80) for free. The current membership runs to 30 June 2021.

To avoid disappointment, please check that passes haven't sold out before buying membership to take advantage of the free pass offer. However, if you get membership and then miss out, we will grant you access to the session recordings as soon as they are ready for viewing.

pūtea āwhina Scholarships:

We have scholarships available to support those from communities who are underserved and underrepresented in the science communication space and would like to attend this event. You do not need to be a SCANZ member to apply for a scholarship.

Hold a watch party!

If you have already bought tickets, you may want to consider holding a 'watch party', where people can gather (and bring their lunch) to watch the session on a large screen and interact with each other offline.

If you plan to hold a watch party and would like other local science communicators to join, email us and we can list it on our website's event's page.

Code of conduct

Harassment and hostile behaviour is not welcome at SCANZ.

If a participant engages in harassing behaviour - whether intentional or unintentional - event organisers or their designees may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender, expulsion from the event, or contacting a higher authority such as a representative from the offender’s institution.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of the local event staff, event organizers, any member of the SCANZ team or executive committee. Please be assured that if you approach us, your concerns will be kept in strict confidence, and we will consult with you on any actions taken.

We expect participants to follow our code of conduct at all conferences, meeting-related social events, workshops, community gatherings, and online communication channels.
